According to the Lubbock county clerk, “millions and millions” of marriages have been performed in Lubbock County since its incorporation in 1881. You can even find Buddy Holly’s marriage certificate in the hard copies on file at the courthouse. The mechanics of maintaining all of these hard copies, and of building digital databases is enormous.
Luckily, if you are planning to propose to your sweetie, you don’t have to worry about all of that. You can just choose the moment and spot, and pop the question. Some of these locations are inherently Lubbock, for those who celebrate the uniqueness that is West Texas. Other spots are gems that take you away from the mundane everyday world. These are some of the most popular places to propose in Lubbock.
Texas Tech University
Die-hard Tech alumni and students will often gravitate to the TTU campus as a scenic location for their proposal. This is partly because the Tech campus is one of the most beautiful in the country. In fact, architecture magazines frequently remarks on Texas Tech’s cohesive architecture and beautifully kept grounds. Whether you choose to drop to one knee in front of the University Seal, the Will Rogers statue, or the Glenna Goodacre statue, your proposal photos, assuming you have a friend sneaky enough to pull it off, will be beautiful. There’s nothing like commemorating your “I do’s” where you probably met – on the Tech campus.
Ransom Canyon
If she’s outdoorsy or you’re just simply looking for a natural destination, you’ve got two great options in and around town. Hike with her through scenic Ransom Canyon, which has several things going for it:
- It’s private and sparsely populated
- It’s not flat like the rest of Lubbock
- It’s beautiful and scenic year round
Propose as you overlook the exquisite Ransom Canyon Lake while the sun sets in hundreds of reds, oranges and yellows. There is also the Ransom Canyon Memorial Chapel, a site frequently used for wedding ceremonies. Walk through their garden filled with cacti, wildflowers and willows, sit on a brick bench and pop the question next to the nearby stream.
Mae Simmons Park Trail
Another great outdoor destination, within Mae Simmons Park is a 10+ mile gravel/dirt trail often used for mountain biking and trail running. It’s a much better option than Lubbock Lake Landmark, offering more privacy and shade. Due to its length, be sure and hike the trail without your sweetheart to find the perfect spot. Also don’t chose a spot on the path, nothing would be worse then popping the question and getting hit by a hardcore mountain biker! Spring and early summer bring out wildflowers and cooler weather. Late summer and you’ll be greeted by thousands of cactus pears blooming along the trail.
Joyland Amusement Park
Are you and your girlfriend children at heart? Then the Joyland Amusement Park is the place for you to ask that life-changing question. Spend the day riding some of their rides. Get her a cotton candy and win her a giant stuffed teddy bear before taking her atop the Skyride to propose as the sun sets in the beautiful West Texas sky.
Stars & Stripes Drive-In Theater
Pop the question in front of the big screen. Stars & Stripes Drive-In Theatre is a blast from the past, and a perfect venue to take advantage of the big skies of West Texas. Back the pick-up into your parking place, get out the lawn chairs, and drape the engagement ring over the straw in her milkshake. We’ll let you choose which movie, but just remember, it will be “your movie” from now on – make it a good one!
Caprock Winery
For a classic Santa Fe experience, check out the Caprock Winery. The Alamo-style façade of the winery, drought-tolerant landscaping, and incredible views of the vineyard are just the beginning of your experience. Visit the tasting room or join the wine club. You can also visit Junior’s Listening Room, where every Thursday you can hear outstanding local musicians. You can hear Caleb Jude Green and the Medicine Mound Duo, the Gary Nix Trio, and many more, with hosts of such notable talent as Junior Vasquez and Kenny Maines. Treat your sweetheart to wine, dinner, and music on the night you ask her the big question.
There you have it. Your choices range from dressy to casual, sophisticated to cute with a variety of backdrops to choose from. Just don’t forget to insure that engagement ring! Which can be added to any standard homeowners or renter’s insurance policy. Hettler Insurance Agency can make sure you have a policy that will cover it against loss or damage, whether you rent or own a home. Give us a call after you pop the question and protect the symbol of your commitment to each other.
