What is Labor Day
Labor Day in 2021 is observed on Monday, September 6th (yes, for small business owners too). Labor Day is an annual U.S. federal holiday set for the first Monday of each September. This day commemorates the U.S. labor movement and its achievements for American workers. Labor Day is a three-day weekend traditionally marking the conclusion of the summer season. (Memorial Day weekend begins the summer season.)
History of Labor Day
The history of Labor Day 2021, in the U.S. and Canada, dates back to the late 19th century when the trade union and labor movements grew radically. A variety of days were chosen by trade union personnel as a day to celebrate labor. The holiday was first proposed in the 1880s by Matthew Maguire, a machinist, while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union of New York in 1882.
Some would say that it was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor in May 1882, when he witnessed the annual labor festival in Toronto, Canada. Oregon became the first state of the U.S. to make it an official public holiday in 1887. The Pullman Strike, In June 1894, resulted in the deaths of workers at the hands of the United States Army and United States Marshals Service. (Workers compensation and/or business owner insurance would have been handy). The United States Congress unanimously voted to approve legislation to make Labor Day a national holiday, and President Grover Cleveland signed it into law six days after the end of the strike.
Traditions of Labor Day
Usually, Labor Day is marked with a parade to demonstrate the strength and hardworking spirit of trade and labor organizations. The parade would be followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This eventually became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. As time went on, speeches by prominent men and women have been added. Slowly, more emphasis has been placed on the civil significance of the holiday.
In recent times, Labor Day is a day of rest or the last chance for many workers to go on trips before the summer ends. For many students, it marks one of the last few days before school starts again. Where it’s allowed, people organize fireworks displays, BBQs, and sports events (the football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend).
International Workers Day
FYI, most of the rest of the world celebrates Labor Day as International Workers Day on May 1st each year, also called Workers Day or Labour Day. But, the date for this global date was based on the Haymarket affair that happened in Chicago on May 4, 1886, as a conflict between the police and workers where 8 people were killed. In the Northern Hemisphere, for other countries, May Day is also on May 1. For those other countries, the day marks the coming of spring and the Labor movement together all in one day.
