Overview of Boss Day

National Boss’s Day holiday is always October 16th. It’s also known as National Boss Day or Bosses Day. This special day recognizes the hardworking boss overseeing the workplace, whether your boss is the owner or an employee. Employees across the U.S. show appreciation for their bosses. It’s a day to remember your boss’s kindness and fairness throughout the year. (By the way, if October 16th falls on a weekend, then Boss Day is celebrated on the closest working day. So, if the day does fall on a weekend, you kind of get to celebrate twice this way, ha ha!)

Our leaders tend to carry heavy loads. They oversee employees and help to guide their careers, along with other “boss-stuff”. Their position makes them responsible for a department, business, or organization while they lead it to success. They tend to have a long list of responsibilities.

Fyi, all bosses have bosses themselves. Depending on the makeup of an organization, those bosses may also answer to someone else. Actually, everyone has a boss of some kind. If your boss is the owner, they still answer to the taxman, the customers, and their merchant accounts. Keeping a business running smoothly with outstanding employees requires balance. These bosses know how to put their best employees forward and allow them to lead with confidence.

HOW TO OBSERVE #BossDay

There are many ways to celebrate our bosses.

– Treat your boss to the day off with a game of golf (a great idea here at Hettler Insurance Agency).
– Throw a potluck breakfast/lunch with your boss’s favorite foods.
– All the staff can sign a card of appreciation.
– Encourage customers or clients to share their favorite things about your boss.
– Create an infographic of your boss’s accomplishments.
– Give them a special shout-out on your blog and/or social media (like we’re doing right now) using the hashtag #BossDay .

NATIONAL BOSS’S DAY HISTORY

National Boss Day began in 1958. Patricia Bays Haroski worked as a secretary for State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois when she registered “National Boss’s Day” with the United States Chamber of Commerce. Why did she pick October 16th? Short answer: it was her father’s birthday (at the time, he was also her employer)! In 1962, Illinois Governor, Otto Kerner, honored Haroski’s registration and officially proclaimed it Boss’s day. Hallmark Cards, in 1979, included Boss’s Day cards in their card production.
